Marshals Newsletter

Wishing you all the best for 2021, and hopefully a better year for Motorsport.

It has been a difficult year with the pandemic for motorsport, however we were fortunate to run the Mull Hire Classic Rally back in March, just before lockdown. To those who marshalled on the Mull Hire Classic this year I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support, however the bad news is the 2021 Mull Classic has been cancelled due to the unpredicted of the pandemic in March.

The club also ran a double stage on the Snowman, which was run in reverse on the second run, A few marshals had to change positions for the second run, this was done in good time although Adrian could have been a bit quicker getting out of the stage, Great effort by everyone who turned out to marshal. (You may have already heard that 2021 Snowman has had to be cancelled), which of course is very disappointing but with recent events there was no choice. So, we know turn our attention to the next event, the Speyside, fingers crossed.

While writing this the news has come through that we are all going into yet more COVID-19 restrictions.

So, what we are needing is, SOMETHING TO CHEER YOU UP FOR CHRISTMAS, how about signing up for the Dunoon Presents Argyll Rally on the 25th & 26th   June 2021.

We are now in the position to start the process of getting Marshals /Radio Marshals signed up for the event. This year we move from the Forest onto the public highways of the Cowal Peninsular

The event starts on Friday evening with Stages 1 and 2 through Dunoon Town Centre, followed by a further 3 stages out on the roads,

For the Friday evening town stage Marshals would need to be available from 1700 (approx.) and the remaining stages on the Friday night from 1800 onwards (approx.).

For the Saturday Stages marshals would be required from 0830 onwards.  Saturday will consist of 4 stages run twice, so plenty off action to see throughout the day.

Service area will be at the Dunoon Stadium as normal.

With the new restrictions being imposed on the county, the future is anyone’s guess, but we will carry on with the process of signing up Marshals / Radio marshals until further notice.

Mull Classic 2021

Joint statement by Mull Car Club and Saltire Rally Club:

Due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and inability to access forests for route planning, the organising team regret to announce that the Mull Hire – Mull Classic Rally will not take place in 2021.

We were very fortunate to hold the rally in 2020, and remain the last rally to take place in Scotland before this terrible virus caused restrictions to be imposed.

While the vaccine looks promising, there are no guarantees that an event of this size, and the associated social gathering, will be permitted in March. Also, we fully expect the motorsport calendar to be very crowded in later 2021, hence finding a new date will be very difficult.

Hence, the organising team will focus their efforts on preparing for the best event possible in March 2022. Thank you for your understanding, stay safe and healthy.

Beatson’s Building Supplies Mull Rally cancelled

  • Tobermory-based event cancelled due to COVID-19 uncertainty
  • Organisers committed to returning with a bigger and – even – better 2021 event
  • News brings disappointment to crews, competitors and officials around the world

Mishnish Lochs will stay silent in October. There’ll be no Group 4 roar up the Glen and the Long One… well, it’ll be shorter than normal this time around.

The Beatson’s Building Supplies Mull Rally – planned for October 8-11 – has been cancelled.

Clerk of the Course Andy Jardine admitted the decision was dictated by ongoing uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. While preparations for the iconic Scottish island rally had been moving forward, with the team behind the sell-out event closely monitoring the Scottish Government’s ‘route out of lockdown,’ the organisers are unwilling to proceed given the possible risk of spreading the virus.

Jardine said: “It was looking good for a while. October seemed so far off and things were opening up again, but now the end of July is looming and we just can’t commit to running the rally not knowing how the situation will develop. It’s tough for the team as we put a lot of effort into developing different ways to work with the coronavirus restrictions, but it isn’t practical to cover all the eventualities and keep everybody safe.

“This year’s been unprecedented in the way we’ve seen our sport simply stopped in its tracks by this pandemic. But we have to remember that an awful lot of people have been – and continue to be – affected in the most tragic way by coronavirus.”

Mull Car Club Chairman, Fred Maclean added: “While some of the island is preparing for some sort of tourist season in the weeks ahead, there remains uncertainty and many places are not opening. Mull has remained apparently COVID-free throughout the lockdown period and there is a nervousness about what might happen when visitors return.

“This is the right decision for Mull and to ensure the rally is welcomed back in, hopefully, happier times in 2021.”

Demand for Beatson’s Building Supplies Mull Rally remains exceptional, with competitors from across the world keeping in regular contact with the organisers in the hope of securing a place, were the 2020 event to run. Jardine’s keen, however, this enforced break is used to take a look at ways to make a great rally even better.

Jardine said: “After the event missed a couple of years due to the insurance issue, we got the overwhelming message that the Mull Rally was still a competitors’ favourite when we broke the internet as entries opened in 2019.

“This has energised the team to use this break to take a step back and think about a review of the format of the event and we’ll be getting our heads together in the next couple of months to see what can be done to freshen it up a bit.

“It goes without saying, none of our Octobers will be the same this year. We’ll all spend a bit longer watching Peter Taylor’s run through Gribun on YouTube! But the key thing – the only thing – is to stay healthy, keep the island healthy and be back, bigger and better next time.”

Motorsport UK and UK General Radio Licences 2020

Notice from John Clayton:

As most people know I am the licence holder for both licences for TOB radios which are normally due on June 1st.

This year Motorsport UK have not issued any reminders as yet and therefore I am yet to receive further instructions with regard to this year. A decision I believe is imminent as to the amount due(normally £5 per set per year).

Also this year sees the UK General licence to be due. This is a 5 year licence to cover what many call the colours frequencies for private use. This fee is £10 per person for 5 years ( ie £2 per year).

Normally I collect both at the same time and I propose to do exactly this once I have the decision from Motorsport UK.

Several of you have been asking what is happening so please do nothing until I am in a position to clarify what the fees will be for 2020 and I will communicate via e-mail and here on the new website.

Thank you for your forbearance,

John Clayton.
