MULL FOREST STAGES RALLY 2006

Saturday the 21st January 2006 saw Mull Car Club's inaugural Ralloy forest stages rally on the island. A compact route with 10 testing stages provided a good days sport for competitors and fun for spectators seeing most cars twice.

We knew it was a special event when Liam Wood in his Daihatsu won stage one - it must have been the shock of having a lovely dry sunny day on Mull in January. Paul and Neil Mackinnon in a Subaru were consistent all day winning 3 stages. Paul showed maturity and skill for the first time in a 4wd- all Dad Neil's wisdom and experience must have helped.

Dougie Hall was running exceedingly well and leading until the end of SS6. Malloch Nicholl was on his pace swapping times with him- a good warm up prior to his Scottish championship campaign.

Running the 2wd cars at the front seemed to be a success. Eddie O'Donnell jnr set the pace from the start and despite sustaining suspension damage in SS9 he carried on to finish as the top 2wd car leaving the prize giving with so many trophies he needed a minder.

Keith Robathan chased all day but couldn't match Eddie's stunning pace and finished 2nd 2wd .Car 1 Daniel Harper in an Astra, had a steady run until SS5 when he lost a lot of time changing a wheel and finished 14th.
Innes Clark won best entertainer of the day as well as third place but the 6R4 of Reay Mackay also entertained the crowds and got fastest time on the last stage.

This was also the first excursion into the forest for the Bearcubs who finished unscathed and got 3rd in class.

Rob Davies who ventured up from Wales had a brilliant day until the penultimate stage caught him out and he slipped off into a big ditch . Though he was keen to continue recovery wasn't possible in time.

Altogether there was a high finishing rate so hopefully everyone will return again next year.
